Turning family meal sharing on or off

3 min read · 403 words · 3 revisions · Updated Sep 5, 2026

One switch, both directions. Family meal sharing decides whether meals from your Family Group reach you, and whether you can send them yours. It starts switched on.

Where the switch is

In the app: You → Preferences → Family meal sharing.

On the web: Health → Settings → Family meal sharing, in the Trackers section.

Both write the same setting, so change it wherever you happen to be.

The switch appears once you are in a Family Group. It is free to change at any tier. A privacy control is never something you have to buy.

What happens when you turn it off

  • No meals reach you. You come off every recipient list in every group you belong to.
  • You cannot send meals. The Share with family? switch disappears from the food you are logging, and the share action disappears from your food log, your saved meals and your meal history.
  • Anything already waiting is hidden, not deleted. Turn the switch back on before those meals expire and they are all still there.
  • Nobody is told. To the rest of your group you are simply not on the list. There is no message, no marker, and no way for them to work it out.

What it does not affect

  • Your Premium. Sharing and your subscription are separate. Turning this off costs you nothing.
  • Your Family Group membership. You stay in the group.
  • The shared pantry. That is a separate switch. See The shared family pantry.
  • Anything already in your diary. A meal you logged from a family share is your own entry and stays exactly where it is.
  • Your own food log. Nothing you have logged is touched either way.

Why it is one switch and not two

Family meal sharing is a two-way arrangement. Somebody who does not want their family's dinners arriving is not offering their own, and a pair of switches would let one person read the room without being in it. One switch keeps it honest and keeps it simple.

Reaching it from Your Data

Your Data lists everybody who can currently see something of yours, and family meal sharing is on it with a Stop sharing meals button. That button and the Preferences switch are the same setting.
