Applying to moderate

2 min read · 362 words · 1 revision · Updated Sep 6, 2026

If you want to help run a forum, you can apply to moderate it. It is one form, it goes to the community's administrators, and a person reads it.

Where the button is

On the thing you want to moderate:

  • A forum: its own page.
  • A category: the category page.
  • A file area: the area's page.

Tap Apply to moderate and write why. Applications are reviewed by hand; there is no automatic approval and no threshold that grants it.

What happens

Your application is filed as pending and routed to an administrator.

  • One pending application per area. Applying again while one is open tells you it is already pending rather than filing a second.
  • Already moderate it? The form says so instead of filing anything.
  • Reapplying after a decision is allowed. A previous application that was decided does not block a new one.

There is no fixed timescale. Communities are run by people, and a quiet week is a quiet week rather than a rejection.

What a moderator does

Pins and unpins, locks and unlocks, moves threads, removes posts, and bans or suspends within the area they moderate. Every one of those actions is published in the public moderation log. See The public moderation log and Forum moderators.

A moderator is not an administrator. The powers are scoped to the area, and no moderation role anywhere in Loopa can see anybody's health data.

An application worth reading

  • Say which area and why that one.
  • Point at what you already do there. Answering questions, welcoming people, reporting things accurately.
  • Say how much time you have. An honest "a few evenings a week" is worth more than an implied promise.
  • One application at a time. Applying for six areas at once reads as wanting a badge.

If you are turned down

It is usually about fit or timing rather than about you, and applying again later is fine. If you want to know more, ask through Modmail.
