Challenges

A challenge is a set of people, one number, and an end date. Joining one shares that number and nothing else, for exactly as long as the challenge runs.

These are the community challenges. Challenges inside an organization work differently and are covered on Running an organization challenge.

What can be a challenge

Six metrics, because these are the ones that turn into a daily number:

activity, weight, water, fasting, sleep, food.

Vitals, goals, measurements and supplements cannot be scored, and Loopa refuses to create a challenge on them rather than letting you run one whose leaderboard could never rank anybody.

Scoring

Pick one when you create it:

  • Cumulative total over the whole run.
  • Goal days: how many days you hit your own target.
  • Longest streak.
  • Average per day.
  • Percent change from where you started.
  • Composite.

For weight, pick percent change. Any other method puts each participant's weight change on the board in real units. Loopa warns you when you choose one, and lets you: it is your challenge. Percent change keeps everybody's actual weight private and still ranks the board.

What joining shares

One metric, from the start date to the end date, and it stops on its own.

The screen tells you exactly that before you join, in a sentence naming the metric and the dates. Leaving revokes it early.

Nothing else in your record is touched. A water challenge shares your water and knows nothing about your weight.

The leaderboard

Ranked from stored daily scores rather than from anybody's log, so a percent-change board can rank people without any participant's actual weight existing on it.

Joining puts you on the board straight away, last and at zero, rather than waiting for the overnight rebuild.

Private challenges

A challenge can be open to the whole community or invite-only.

An invite-only challenge you were not invited to answers exactly as one that does not exist. You cannot find out what private challenges are running by trying id numbers. If you were given an 8-character code, holding the code is the invitation.

Ending, leaving and full challenges

  • A challenge has a maximum size; a full one refuses new participants and says so.
  • Leaving revokes your sharing immediately.
  • When the end date passes, sharing ends by itself. Nobody has to remember to switch it off.
