Working out the plates

The plate calculator tells you what to hang on each side of the bar. When the weight you typed cannot actually be built out of plates, it says so in plain words instead of quietly rounding it.

That last part is the whole point. 102.5 kg on a 20 kg bar needs 41.25 kg a side, which no normal rack makes. A calculator that shows 40 and stays quiet leaves you believing you lifted a number you did not.

Opening it

You are in the workout logger, on the set you are about to lift.

  • Press and hold the weight field. That is the gesture on both iPhone and Android.
  • On iPhone you can also tap the set number at the left of the row and choose Work out the plates. Use this one with VoiceOver. A press-and-hold on a text field competes with the system's own text selection.

What it shows

The bar, drawn. Plate height tracks plate weight, so the picture reads the way a loaded bar reads on the rack. You can check it against the plates in front of you without counting a list.

Per side, largest plate first (2 × 20 kg, 1 × 5 kg), with what each row adds to the whole bar.

A verdict, which is one of three:

  • "25 kg exactly" means it can be built, with the number of plates to fetch.
  • "You can't make 102.5 kg", with what the bar does come to and the next weight up that is makeable.
  • "That's lighter than the bar", for anything under the empty bar, where you want dumbbells or a lighter bar rather than fewer plates.

Jump to offers a few round targets above your bar so you can check the next jump without typing.

On iPhone, Use <weight> puts the weight the bar actually makes into the set you were editing, so what you log is what you lifted.

The bar

The bar starts at your saved bar weight (20 kg or 45 lb unless you have changed it), and you can type a different one in the sheet for a specialty bar without changing your default.

Everything is in the unit you already read, kilograms or pounds. The calculator works in whole plate denominations rather than decimals, so it never reports a shortfall that is really a rounding artifact.

Tier

Training is part of Loopa Premium, and the plate calculator is part of the workout logger. See Logging a workout.
