The symptom journal and daily check-in

6 min read · 1,196 words · 1 revision · Updated Oct 25, 2026

Two quick records sit beside every protocol: the symptom journal, for anything you notice, and the daily check-in, for how the day has been. Both feed your pattern, your week plan and the summary you take to your prescriber.

They describe and never interpret. Loopa counts what you recorded and lays it against the doses you logged. It never says why something happened and never suggests changing anything. Questions about your medication belong with your prescriber.

Both are part of Loopa Premium, like the rest of Medication protocols. Every new account starts with 14 days of full Premium, and nothing you recorded is deleted when Premium ends.

The symptom journal

Getting there

Open Health tab › The Log › Protocols, tap Dashboard on the protocol, then Symptom journal near the bottom. On a hormone therapy dashboard the Last N days card also has Open the symptom journal.

The screen is titled Symptoms and has two tabs: Journal and Food patterns.

The Journal tab

Days since your last dose. Once you have entries, the top card lists each symptom with its average strength ("avg 2.4 of 5") and a row of cells, one for each number of days after a dose (0, 1, 2 and so on up to 7 or more), with how many entries fell in each. It is what you logged, grouped by when.

Your entries, newest first. Each shows the symptom, its strength "n of 5", the date with same day as a dose or N days after a dose, your note, and any question you wrote (with a speech-bubble icon).

Deleting an entry. Touch and hold it, then tap Delete this entry. It goes straight away, with no confirmation.

Empty. With nothing recorded the screen says Nothing recorded: "Record how you feel and Loopa lines it up against the doses you logged. It describes the pattern; it never tells you what to do about it." Tap Record a symptom to add the first one. A What published guidance expects card can appear here too, quoting the published label for what you take where one exists. See Published guidelines in your protocol.

The Food patterns tab

This tab counts which foods you logged in the three hours before each symptom entry. A food is listed only when it was there before at least five entries of a symptom and before at least half of them, and it is shown as a count, never a cause. Until a symptom has enough entries the tab shows a Still learning card. With nothing to compare yet it says Nothing yet: "Record symptoms and log food, and what was eaten near each entry is counted here." More on how this works: Symptoms and food patterns.

Recording a symptom

Tap + (read aloud as "Record a symptom"). The sheet is titled How are you feeling?, with Cancel at the top.

  • Which protocol. Shown only when two or more protocols are on. Changing it clears the symptom you picked, because each protocol has its own list.
  • What. One symptom from your protocol's list:
Protocol Symptoms
GLP-1 Nausea, Fatigue, Constipation, Food aversion, Heartburn, Injection-site reaction, Other
Testosterone therapy Acne, Mood change, Sleep disturbance, Water retention, Injection-site pain, Headache, Other
Hormone therapy Hot flashes, Night sweats, Mood change, Sleep disturbance, Breast tenderness, Bloating, Headache, Spotting, Other
Peptide protocol Injection-site reaction, Headache, Fatigue, Water retention, Appetite change, Flushing, Other

For Other, say what it was in the note. If the list has not loaded the sheet says "The symptom list for this protocol hasn't loaded yet."

  • How strong. A scale from 1 to 5, from Barely there to As bad as it gets. Tap the chosen number again to clear it.
  • Note, placeholder In your own words. The microphone button beside it (read aloud as "Dictate", then "Stop dictating") turns speech into text on your iPhone. Loopa offers it only where the iPhone can transcribe without sending audio anywhere. If it cannot, you see "This device can't transcribe without sending audio away, so Loopa doesn't offer it here. Type instead." If Speech Recognition or the microphone is switched off for Loopa in iOS Settings, the message says which one.
  • For your appointment. A field with the placeholder A question for your prescriber, in your words, up to 300 characters (the counter shows "n / 300"). "Optional. It is saved with this entry and listed on your appointment summary."

Record it saves the entry and shows RECORDED. It stays disabled until you have picked a symptom and a strength.

The daily check-in

Getting there

On the Protocols hub tap Daily check-in, or on a protocol's dashboard tap Daily check-in or Open the daily check-in on the How you have felt card.

The screen is titled Daily check-in and asks How has today been?

The sliders

Each one is a 1 to 5 scale. Tap a number to answer it, and tap the same number again to clear it. You can answer as many or as few as you like.

Slider 1 means 5 means Shown
Energy Running on empty Full tank Always
Mood Low Good Always
Sleep quality Slept badly Slept well Always
Motivation Not today Ready Always
Food noise Quiet Loud With a GLP-1 protocol on, or while you are in the Off-Ramp
Libido Low High Only after you switch on Add libido to the daily check-in in testosterone therapy Settings

Food noise is explained on Food noise, and how Loopa tracks it. Libido is never shared with a coach, even when you record it.

Under the sliders is the same For your appointment question field as on a symptom. Clearing it and saving again removes today's question.

Saving, and changing today

Save today saves the check-in and shows CHECKED IN. It is disabled until you have answered at least one slider. There is one check-in per day: open the screen again later and today's answers are already filled in, so you can change any of them and save again.

Recently

The Recently card shows how many days you answered and, for each slider, your average out of 5 with a small line of how it has moved. The protocol dashboard's How you have felt card shows the same figures over 14 days ("N of the last M days answered").

Where these show up

On Android

The Android app has the same symptom journal and daily check-in, with the same lists and scales. Its note field has a dictation button too (read aloud as "Dictate the note"), and the question field is labelled "A question for your appointment (optional)".
